The state of Nevada has now been offering online poker since late April 2013. Since then, the poker numbers at the state’s only legal online site at Ultimate Poker are holding steady at around a couple hundred real money players online at all times.
These figures have continued to gain traction as the weeks have passed, however, with WSOP.com’s software inching closer and closer to going live, it looks like the numbers could start to level off between the two. While the actual traffic projections are unclear, the numbers could only increase exponentially if states like Nevada could work hand in hand with other state’s player pools that have also passed online poker laws (ie New Jersey).
The statistics makes one wonder if players are skittish to get online since online poker is so new or if they simply do not want to play at Ultimate Poker. Will the WSOP.com site be more popular or would a site that involved PokerStars or Full Tilt Poker be able to draw in more poker players in the state? This development makes for a very interesting debate.
The lawmakers in the state understand the need for intrastate options because the player field would be must larger. Brian Sandoval, the Governor of Nevada, passed a bill that would allow for contracts to be signed with other states to offer this option. Nevada now waits for other states to pass online poker legislation or for the states that offer it to make agreements to widen the player pool within the Copper State.
It would be to everyone’s advantage to come to agreements for intrastate poker options so that the playing fields are open and all sites operational in the US can succeed. Only time will tell how the state of Nevada will fair when it comes to online poker options but if intrastate poker options do not open up soon, the playing field may be whittled down to the double digits at some online poker sites.
