Martin Shapiro is a poker player who goes by the name PokerXanadu in popular poker forums. The player recently was placed in the limelight after creating online poker legislation. The player believes that his legislation proposal is in favor of players and should gain enough support to be passed into legislation.
According to a recent report by Pokerfuse, Shapiro believes that his proposal can be a guideline for legislators to see how players want to be protected when it comes to online poker. Shapiro also feels as though his option would be one that is ‘passable in today’s political climate’.
Speaking to Pokerfuse, Shapiro stated: “I undertook this venture because no one else was doing it. Every bill that has been introduced to Congress to date has been an incomplete bill and which isn’t passable because it is partisan to a limited number of vested interests. I thought it time to come out with a bill which covers every issue, preserves all the protections and rights of players and sufficiently meets the needs of all major vested interests in a compromise with which they can support.”
The new proposal is currently under creation and would provide legalization for internet poker and at the same time restricting other online gambling options. Shapiro is using parts of other proposals that were previously introduced to create one common bill. He has taken parts of Barton and King’s proposed bills and other measures to make one bill that has different aspects of each previous proposal.
The new bill would cover licensing, operator taxation, consumer taxation, regulations, enforcement, protection of consumers and more. A ‘bad actor clause’ was also included in the measure as Shapiro felt as though Congress would not pass any legislation without one. The poker pro is now asking for feedback on the bill from the community. Shapiro will be presenting his bill to US representatives, senators and others to try and get the support he needs.
