The state of California has been a hot topic when it comes to online poker and gambling legislation. The state would be the largest to offer the option in the United States and could make a real difference in the online gaming landscape. However, as of right now, there is no legislation in the state offering legalized and regulated online gambling. But there are discussions and proposals taking place and according to recent reports by several media outlets, including Pokerfuse, PokerStars wants in on the action.
PokerStars tried to reenter the United States online gambling market via New Jersey but failed to do so. The company suffered let down after let down in the state and now want to make sure they get a fair shot of entering the California online poker market. It has been rumored that PokerStars is working with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians to oppose laws that would include a bad actor clause.
It was a similar situation such as a bad actor clause that prevented PokerStars from entering the New Jersey market. The online poker company wants to avoid this issue in California. A bad actor clause is basically a portion of a bill that will block any group from gaining a license and servicing local players due to operating previously in a contradictory manner according to the United States gambling laws.
The Rational Group, the parent company of PokerStars, wants to avoid this type of situation in California. A tweet recently posted by iGaming Player got the rumor started by stating that a ‘good source close to the situation’ stated that PokerStars and the tribe were working to close a deal in the state of California, tweeting: “no wonder there is no ‘bad actor’ clause in the bill supported by Morongo.”
In the state of California there are now two bills that have been proposed. SB 1366 is one that is supported by the Lou Correa(State Senator). AB 2291 is the other, which is sponsored by Reginald Jones-Sawyer.
