The New Jersey Championship of Online Poker took place last month for the very first time and offered players in the state a variety of events to choose from. Each event promised a set buy-in and prize structure just like any other online poker tournament would, but now players are beginning to post their concern about one event in particular on popular poker forums, stating the prize structure had to be a mistake.
According to a recent report by Pokerfuse, the event in question is #14, a High Roller tournament. This event had a guaranteed prize pool of $30,000 with a $500 buy-in. With this tournament, $20,000 was reserved for first place and $10,000 was reserved for second. The day of the tournament, 150 players entered, which created a prize pool of $70,000.
After the tournament took place, many players complained that they had no idea the event was paying out for only two places. Basically, the cash was split two ways instead of giving other high finishers a payout. PartyPoker stated in a press release that they recognize the advance communication of the tournament structure was not great about what might happen if the $30,000 guarantee was exceeded, the site did offer the prize details for player viewing. The site also stated that they regret they did not advertise the structure more as a feature of the event since the actual turnout and comments after the event indicated that the tournament may have had even more players participating.
The lobby at PokerStars New Jersey did show that the first two places would be given prize money but for those who registered late, this was not known until later on. The online poker room has stated they will not be going back to the prize structure of the event and the results will stay the same. The poker site says they will take greater care in future events to emphasize if a special payout structure exists and hopes players will return for such series events in the future.
Poker players of the event were not happy and complained that the tournament lobby did not explain the payout structure and many feel the site made a mistake and does not want to own up to it. In most cases, more than 2 places are paid in a large field of tournament players so this is why the field is wondering why only the top two were given a payout.
