A recent report by PokerNews, has brought a situation to light that allegedly took place at the Rio All-Suite Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. According to several tweets on Twitter, three poker pros are claiming that their hotel rooms were accessed and personal items were stolen, including their laptops and cash. This is very reminiscent of the EPT Barcelona incident last year where laptops were stolen and were found to have been tampered with. The WSOP players claiming the theft mentioned the past incident when commenting on Twitter.
Lauri Pesonen, a pro from Finland, was the first to post in the late evening hours on Tuesday about a theft of his personal property. Pesonen stated that both his and @Jouhkb’s laptops were stolen from their room at the Rio. Other items such as their wallets, iPads, etc were not touched which made Pesonen state: ‘EPT Barcelona again?’
The very next day, Manh Nguyen took to Twitter and stated that large sums of money were taken from his Rio room the night before. Then another Finnish pro, Joni Jouhkimainen, stated on Twitter that he was subject to stolen items as well. Jouhkimainen stated that the sanitary bags and sunglasses were stolen instead of the player’s wallets and iPad, which he found to be absurd.
PokerNews was able to speak with Nguyen about what happened in his case. The pro stated that he came back to his hotel room with his friend Jimmy Chen. The two checked in on the 27th at around 6:30 pm and then came to the room, dropped off their bags and then headed out to eat dinner. After coming back from dinner, the pro realized that $35,000 had been stolen from the room. The two did not arrive back to the hotel room until around midnight.
Nguyen stated that they were lucky that all their money was not in one spot and that it did not look like the perpetrators had looked through the other items. The room was not messy and Nguyen stated it looked like they almost knew to check the backpacks for the cash. Police was called to the scene and security from the Rio. A report was also filed, however, Nguyen stated that he found out the hallways of the Rio do not have security cameras, only the elevators, so he feels like he is screwed when it comes to finding out who took his cash.
This story is of course ongoing and it will be interesting to see how the Rio and the WSOP handle these allegations as well as if any more players find they are affected by similar instances.
