Online poker and casino gaming did well in the state of New Jersey for the month of August, according to a recent revenue report by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. The figures for the month of August show that the states iGaming options were able to increase from $10.07mm in July to $10.5mm last month. Poker contributed $2.2mm of the amount while casino gaming earned the majority at $8.3mm.
When comparing the casinos in New Jersey from July to August, one can see that some struggled while others shined. The Borgata earned a 10% increase in revenues which came mostly from online casino game play. Caesars revenues fell flat and the Golden Nugget saw a significant loss of over $200,000 from month to month.
The Tropicana/Virgin managed to continue to see steady growth while the Betfair/Trump Plaza also saw significant growth. The Trump Taj/Ultimate partnership saw an increase as well with a slight increase of around $15,000.
In the coming months, it is expected that the online poker industry will expand with recent changes in the industry as well as the upcoming WSOP Main Event. Online poker has seen improvements to the payment process and geolocation features which will allow players to compete at online poker rooms with ease while the WSOP Main Event this November should generate interest in online game play as well.
And lastly, let’s not forget that PokerStars is expected to launch in the state in the coming weeks. Supposedly, on the 1st of October, we will see the poker giant reenter the US online poker market via NJ. If the online poker room actually gets started in New Jersey with online poker gaming this winter, we should see the revenues advance further as players try out the new option. It will be interesting to see how the industry fares if PokerStars does launch next month or in the near future.
