Carbon Poker sent emails out to affiliates on Friday with bad news. The site decided to stop offering its affiliate program effective June 1. There is a silver lining. Action given by players referred to Carbon Poker before June 1 will continue to generate revenue share for their affiliates.
This move comes amid the slowest payout times in the past year at Carbon Poker. U.S. players report waiting 10-12 weeks for checks to arrive from Carbon Poker. Skrill was recently dropped as an option for players outside the U.S.
Players outside the U.S. had their pending Skrill requests recently reversed. Some had been waiting more than one month. Carbon Poker asked these players to request bank wires, which are processed in about three weeks.
Players are not the only ones complaining about slow payments from Carbon Poker. Many affiliates report late payments from the site. Some affiliates have not been paid for action since February. Most affiliate payments are two months behind, according to reports.
This is not the first time Carbon Poker cut its costs. In 2013, Carbon Poker stopped offering rakeback. In 2014, Carbon Poker stopped paying all VIP rewards to players. Later that year, it started charging 3% to withdraw, only offering players one free withdrawal per year.
Professional Rakeback expanded what this may mean to players. Affiliates can create an additional avenue for communication when there are player issues, as well as help draw and retain player interest in a site. With the loss of the affiliate program, fewer players will be exposed to information about Carbon Poker. This may be exactly what they want.
With that said, Carbon Poker has every right to end its affiliate program. It gave notice to affiliates and will continue to honor existing agreements on players that have already been referred. While affiliates may want to continue promoting the popular Merge Gaming site, at least they will get paid on existing players. That is more than can be said about some other online poker sites.
