The final starting day of the World Series of Poker Main Event has come to an end and once late registration was concluded, the event had a total of 6420 players competing. This was a smaller field than 2014’s 6,683 but not by much. The $10,000 buy-in of the Main Event paid by each player created a prize pool of just over $60 million, with first place to earn over $7.6 million.
Once the final table is named, the players will return to compete in the November Nine with a minimum of $1 million provided for those remaining. 1,000 players will earn a minimum of $15,000, earning just over the $10,000 buy-in, a nice return on investment.
To start the event, Martin Jacobson, the champion of 2014, gave the Shuffle Up and Deal announcement but was unable to last long, being knocked out during the day of play in Nevada. Several former Main Event champs were in attendance including Ryan Reiss, Phil Hellmuth, Jamie Gold, Peter Eastgate and Joe Hachem. A few former winners who were unable to move forward include Greg Merson and Joe Cada.
When Day 2 began, there were 5,000 players remaining in the competition. The first Day 2 began yesterday for those who competed in the Day 1A and 1B competition. Today marks Day 2 for players who took part in Day 1C gaming.
As of the most recent update to the WSOP site, 3393 players remain. The action will continue with players battling it out at the felt to see who will make the final table and be guaranteed at least a $1 million prize. Current chip leader is Amar Anand who holds just over 600,000 with Calvin Lee a close second at just over 500,000. As the action continues, we will keep you up to date as the event narrows down to the November Nine.
