Just a short time ago, we brought you the news that Ray Lesniak, a current Senator of New Jersey, would most likely be running for Governor of the state. Lesniak has been a proponent for online gaming for some time now and if he is able to step into the position of Governor in New Jersey, he will most certainly be in a position to assist with furthering the industry in the state and on a federal level.
On Friday, Brian Pempus of CardPlayer, spoke with Senator Lesniak on several topics, including his running for Governor and online gaming. We know that Lesniak has not officially announced he will be running for governor and now have learned the he does not plan on announcing anything until after next year’s presidential elections.
In the past, Lesniak has mentioned that he would like to create an online gaming mecca in the state of New Jersey. When asked about this subject, he believes the state can still accomplish this but first must license Amaya Gaming and give PokerStars access to operating in the state. Lesniak states he was told Amaya would invest in Atlantic City so he continues to be aggressive in pursuing online gaming operators to bring their base operations to the state. After being asked if licensing was still on track for Amaya/PokerStars this fall, Lesniak hestitated to guess but based on the information he has received, the licensing should take place ‘in short order’.
Lesniak has also been a proponent of working with other states and even other countries in the online gambling industry. When asked about working with Pennsylvania, the Senator quickly stated he would be willing to work with the state if they legalize and regulate online gaming.
It is definitely interesting to see the online gambling industry from an inside position as with the Senator’s remarks. The state of New Jersey continues to be at the forefront of online gaming within the United States as well as providing a reference point for additional states who are looking to get into the industry as well.
