As we reported just a few days ago, New York State will be hosting a hearing on online poker to discuss a poker-only bill. The Senate committee, the New York Senate Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee, will meet on September 9th at 1:00 pm to discuss poker gaming in an online capacity. According to the website of the Senate, the hearing will be hosted ‘to Discuss the Future of Online Poker in New York State’.
The public hearing will be available via live stream so interested individuals can watch what happens. Up for discussion is S 5302 which is a proposal created by Senator John Bonacic, also the chairman of the committee. The bill would regulate iPoker and the details of the bill should be discussed in the hearing.
The legislation was proposed as legislation for poker only which means that online casino gaming would not be included. The only state with regulation that offers only poker is Nevada while New Jersey and Delaware offer both poker and casino gaming. By looking at revenues created in New Jersey, it seems like the smart decision for New York would be to offer both gaming options online.
A list of those who will testify during the hearing has not been announced as of yet, but we do know that John Pappas, the Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance will be in attendance. Oral testimony will be by invite only so it will be interesting to see who will be in attendance. The hearing is scheduled for four hours, with Bonacic stating previously that the pros and cons of his proposed legislation will be discussed.
New York is currently focused on land-based gaming but seems to be considering online gaming options as well to prepare to be a competitor in the overall gaming industry in the United States. It will most likely be some time before the state will move forward with any online poker legislation, but at least the subject is on the table.
