Chris Koster is a democrat serving as the Attorney General for the state of Missouri and expectations are high that he will run for the position of governor in the state in 2016. As of right now, Koster is using his position to try and push to see a federal ban put in place against online gambling in the United States. Following the lead of Sheldon Adelson, Koster has made his thoughts known of the online gambling industry, working together with the Attorney General of South Carolina, Alan Wilson, to distribute letters to state attorneys general around the US, asking for support in the matter.
In the letter, Wilson and Koster are asking for the attorneys general to sign in support of the Restoration of America’s Wire Act, pressing Congress to act on the measure. The RAWA legislation was created of course, as a way to change the ruling in 2011 by the Department of Justice that stated online gambling besides sports betting is not considered illegal under the act.
In the letter, it read:
“DOJ’s revised interpretation of the Wire Act opened the door to expansive Internet gambling and has had significant negative impacts on our states from money laundering to exploitation of children to helping finance terrorist organizations.”
The letter went on to state that the expansion of online gambling is now able to undermine efforts by state and local law enforcement to outlaw gambling which remains prohibited in several states. It is interesting to note that Koster is a democrat and is in the position of the Republican Party. In a statement, Koster reported that he does not consider himself anti-gaming per say but he is opposed to the expansion of unregulated gambling online.
Koster further stated that perhaps he is being too conservative on the issue but he believes that Missourians share in his concern in regards to the ‘unbridled growth of gambling in our culture’.
