When PokerStars announced changes to the benefits that could be earned by high volume and high stakes players, members of the site were not happy. Starting tomorrow, some players are planning on a boycott of the site, from the 1st until the 3rd. Dani Stern took to the TwoPlusTwo poker forums to discuss the changes and to talk about a demonstrative effort to show PokerStars that the members of the site are not just individuals but a body of players.
According to information received by PocketFives, the protest was started by Team Russia and Stern is trying to get support for the boycott. Stern stated on TwoPlusTwo that PokerStars/Amaya announced an aggressive overhaul of the VIP system for 2016, deceiving SNE players about the benefits they would receive and have made the decision to discontinue the SNE program. PokerStars also removed all of the rewards for the high takes games from $5/$10 and up.
PokerStars made the changes along with others stating they were doing so to be a site for recreational players but Stern says this is not happening. Stern claims that PokerStars is telling lies and players will not stand for it. It is believed that 1,200 players have signed on to strike the site so far and Stern believes the number will reach 2,000 by tomorrow. Apparently, players have been tweeting about the boycott and will continue to do so during the strike dates.
Changes at PokerStars include a cap on the VIP Club rewards, a new program titled VIP Steps and higher stakes games not rewarding players with VPPs. PokerStars also decided to take action on third-party software. It will be interesting to see if the strike does anything to the traffic numbers at PokerStars and if the brand will respond to the allegations by the poker pros involved.
