The Restoration of Americas Wire Act will most likely be the subject of a hearing with the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform next week after the new hearing was just added to the Committee’s agenda. The hearing is scheduled for the 9th of December, with the title ‘A Casino in Every Smartphone—Law Enforcement Implications’, covering the subject of online gambling.
The chairman of the committee, Representative Jason Chaffetz, introduced the House version of the RAWA legislation back in February and will of course be present during the hearing. The legislation seeks to ban online gambling in the United States in most forms by undoing the 2011 decision by the Department of Justice on the Wire Act of 1961.
The list of witnesses that will attend the hearing has not been announced by the committee as of yet. A hearing took place back in March that covered online gambling and RAWA with the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, with a seemingly one-sided list of witnesses only interested in banning online gambling.
The theme of the hearing for next week appears to focus on law enforcement, so it will be interesting to see who will make the witness list and how law enforcement will be discussed. The RAWA legislation continues to be pushed by opponents of online gambling, with the latest happenings taking place in Pennsylvania as well as Attorney’s General signing on in support.
In Pennsylvania, online gaming legislation is moving forward, so the opponents of the industry created an ad campaign to try and stop the progression. With the Attorney’s General, a letter has moved around trying to get all AGs across the United States to show support in favor of the RAWA legislation. Even the Attorney General of Nevada, Adam Laxalt, announced that he would be signing the letter, and will most likely be in attendance during next week’s hearing, despite Nevada already offering online gaming successfully.
