2016 US Open Recap; Betting Preview for Monfils vs Pouille (Sept. 6th, 2016)

US Open Tennis Logo

We are into the second week of the U.S. Open, which is also the last Grand Slam tennis event of the year. If you’re looking for some of my favorite tennis betting tips for this year’s Open championship at Flushing Meadows, then please keep reading my analysis below. We will delve into the championship’s best moments thus far, as well as give you an additional FREE pick for Tuesday’s quarterfinal matchup between Gael Monfils and Lucas Pouille.

The Biggest Upset

Well this hands down has to be Rafael Nadal losing to a talented young French player in the round of 16, Lucas Pouille. Unfortunately, Nadal has not looked like himself in the past 2 years and things are only going to get tougher as be continue to battle “Father Time.”

He use to have this aura about him where nobody thought they could beat him, but now, that has gone – even on the clay courts. It also seems like Nadal himself doesn’t believe he can win another Grand Slam. He has lost so much confidence it feels like he is vulnerable versus a lot of players and beating someone like a Djokovic seems a long way away.

The Most Bizarre Moment of the US Open?

This award goes to Marcos Baghdatis, we all know Marcos is a bit of a character on the tennis court. Some of you may remember when he broke 4 rackets consecutively at the change of ends when playing the Australian Open in 2012. This moment was pretty bizarre and his response to his reason was priceless!

Flash forward to this weekend, where Baghdatis’s ‘Round of 16’ match vs Gael Monfils saw him pull out his iPhone at the change of ends. Well, as he started texting on his device, the umpire gave Baghdatis an “unsportsmanlike conduct” warning. Baghdatis spoke to the umpire and said he was simply checking the time. Unfortunately, his excuse did fly with umpire Alison Hughes, as it’s not too dificult to see the HUGE clock on the court itself. Oops!

The Feel Good Story

Juan Martin Del Potro has dealt with his fair share of injuries in his career. After several surgeries to repair his wrists, Del Potro has managed to still remain a fan favorite on the tour. While he has missed numerous tournaments over the past few years, he is has now earned a spot in the US Open quarterfinals and has a really good chance of making the semifinals.

Should he get through his QF opponent, it would set up a possible rematch vs Andy Murray, who he finished in 2nd place against in the 2016 Olympics tennis final just last month.

Some Quick Predictions For The US Open 2016

What’s the BEST bet to load up on for Pouille vs Monfils?

If you are looking for daily tennis betting tips then look no further than here for my betting prediction on Tuesday’s quarterfinal match between Lucas Pouille and Gael Monfils. Pouille just beat Rafael Nadal in an epic 5-set thriller, including a dramatic 7-6 capper in the 5th set. He is clearly is playing well and will be riding a huge wave of confidence going into this match.

Monfils and Pouille have have once met each other at the Australian Open in 2015, with that match going the distance and ending with Monfils winning in 5 sets. It is hard to fathom that Pouille isn’t going to take at least ONE set in this match, with fatigue being the only real obstacle in his way. The young Frenchman has now played three 5-set matches in a row and it would be unrealistic to see him lose in straight sets to Monfils at this juncture of the tournament.

In this particular match, we only need him to win the first set though, then we are laughing all the way to the bank. This is because most international books are paying +168 odds on Pouille winning just ONE set. Load up on this bet if it’s still available!

Djokovic a “Must Bet” (AGAIN) for US Open Champion?

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that throwing Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray’s name in the hat when it comes to betting on ANY event they’re playing in is a good play. However, if there’s any type of “safe” choice in a Djokovic/Murray final then my money would probably be on Novak, who is going for his 13th Grand Slam title and looking to continue his dominance against Britain’s favorite [tennis] son.

Djokovic is also trying to chase down the remarkable Roger Federer for most Grand Slam titles between them before he calls it a career. “Joker” has won 6 out of the last 9 Grand Slams, including 4 out of the last 5. On top of all this, he is the defending champion at the US Open and looking in great form to defend his title.

Most books have EVEN odds on Djokovic winning his 3rd US Open in the last 6 years. The next closest competitor is the aforementioned Andy Murray, who was going off at +180 at BetOnline and Bovada before the US Open started a little over a week ago.
