On Monday, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake and the Kahnawake Gaming Commission were able to reach an agreement to fight illegal online gambling via unapproved sites. After September 30th, sites that are unapproved for legal operation will not be able to be accessed legally in the United States. This will include such sites as provided by Bovada and Ignition brands.
The DGE reportedly learned that DContinent 8 LLC, a licensee in New Jersey, may have provided services to gambling sites that are not legal via the Canadian data center. Kerry Langan, a spokeswoman for the DGE, stated that the company is a technical service provider to data centers and provides service options for several online gaming providers in the state.
According to the Director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement, David Rebuck, regulators in New Jersey have discussed unique jurisdictional issues with the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and the Mohawks before coming to a mutual agreement. Rebuck stated that the Division is pleased to have the assistance of the KGC as a fellow regulator and look forward to working together in the future.
Online gaming operations in New Jersey are only supposed to take place within the borders of the state via licensed gaming sites and regulators have had to work hard to prevent unauthorized or illegal gaming from taking place. New Jersey is the largest market in the United States, with currently only three states offering such gaming options. Out of the just over $160 million earned last year from legalized online gambling in the US, $148 million came from New Jersey.
Yesterday, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission released a statement on the matter which read that the commission has directed that an applicant for licensing or existing licensee that accepts players from a state in the US without being authorized by the individual state will be engaging in an activity that adversely affects Kahnawake’s jurisdictional integrity or reputation. Applications of such operators will be denied while existing licensees have until the 30th of September to modify operations.
