The online gambling laws in Australia are set to change based on a series of amendments that have been created, virtually banning all online gaming except sports betting. Because of this, operators are considering removing services from the country, with the first to do so being Vera & John. The operator offers an English language online casino in Australia that is quite popular and notified their Australian customers recently that their accounts would be closed before the calendar year ends.
According to a report by Haley at Flushdraw.net, the move by the company is expected to be the first of many departures from Australia by online poker and casino providers. Vera & John have yet to formally announce the departure on their website but have sent out a brief email alerting customers of the change, just before Christmas.
In the announcement, it stated that the online casino was sorry to be saying goodbye but the time had come. Due to a business decision, Vera & John would no longer be offering services in the jurisdiction and the accounts of players would close in one week. Players would no longer be able to make deposits.
Any funds that have not been removed can be transferred to a payment provider chosen by the player within the next week. The email did not include alternative withdrawal methods for customers who do not withdraw their funds before the year ends. One could assume that contacting customer service would be needed for information in this regard.
It is expected that more operators will be making their exit from the Australian gaming market as the gaming activity has never been made legal in the country and new clarifications to the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016 passed back in November. The changes should see many European operators move away from the market in the future.
