Ray Lesniak has served as a state senator for New Jersey for many years and now has his eye on the position of governor. Lesniak has decided that he is going to run for governor, filing paperwork on Wednesday with the New Jersey State Election Law Enforcement Commission to formally announce his decision. Lesniak will have to take on Democrat Phil Murphy and Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, both favorites to win their party’s nomination. Guadagno has not announced yet if she will be running for the position.
Poker and casino supporters will be happy to see Lesniak running for the position as he has long been a proponent of gambling expansion for the state. In 2015, Lesniak said he would not be seeking reelection in the position that he had served in for almost four decades. Speaking to NJ.com, Lesniak stated that the final decision to run was that he could not hold himself back. The Senator said that the state needs a fighter and he is a fighter, with New Jersey needing fundamental reform and restructuring.
If Lesniak were to replace Chris Christie as governor he would have to deal with several issues involving the gambling industry. Atlantic City online casinos have done well for the past few years, securing a quality online poker and casino gaming experience for residents as well as visitors. Lesniak would no doubt have to deal with online gambling issues as they arise as well as land based gaming.
Lesniak has supported online gaming in the United States for many years and it was a bill created by the senator that saw New Jersey be able to offer such gaming options. He still plans on turning the state into a gambling mecca, having been in support of interstate partnerships as well as international ones. It seems that if Lesniak were to become governor, we could see New Jersey join Delaware and Nevada as part of the Multi State Internet Gaming Association.
