Across the United States, several individual states are considering legalizing online poker gaming to further strengthen their gambling industries. However, for some states, there is no legislation in place in regards to poker or casino gaming period, or such gaming is considered illegal. In the state of Virginia, a senator is hoping to establish a clearer definition of what is legal as far as gambling is concerned by introducing a live poker regulation bill.
Senator Louise Lucas introduced S 1400 last week, a new gambling bill that seeks to regulate the game of poker as one of skill. If the game were to receive such a classification, it would no longer be illegal in the state.
A provision is included in the bill that would regulate poker tournaments, but only in compliance with regulations and conditions that are introduced by Lucas. Poker tournament organization would be oversaw by the State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, as per the measure.
S 1400 is not the first bill that Lucas has proposed to see gambling available in Virginia. Over the years, Lucas has tried several times but has been unsuccessful. The attempt to redefine the game of poker as one of skill may seem like a small effort, but apparently it is going to take baby steps for the state to see some positive movement in regards to poker gaming.
Virginia is not a state known for a booming gambling industry but neighboring states that are consistently building a growing casino industry may push lawmakers in the state to take action. Maryland is one neighbor who has seen great growth by way of casino gaming and is certainly bringing in residents of Virginia to enjoy their gambling options. Virginia does offer lottery gaming and in the past has allowed horse racing but this activity stopped after the Colonial Downs facility shut down operations.
It will be interesting to see how the measure by Lucas fares and if the state will slowly begin to create a positive path for poker gaming to take place without consequence, as it becomes a legal and regulated activity.
