The bustling gambling town of Las Vegas is known for offering quality casino and poker gaming. Home to the WSOP and other major events, it is not hard to find some kind of gaming action in Sin City. However, over the past few years, poker rooms have continued to shut down at top gaming venues. Back in March, the Hard Rock shut down their poker room with the Monte Carlo shutting down their poker room in April. Now, it appears that the Luxor will be closing their’s as well, with nine less poker tables on offer in Las Vegas by June.
As reported by John Mehaffey, the news of the Luxor poker room closure was made known via employees of the venue. Reportedly this past Friday, a meeting took place in which the poker room was announced to be closing with a shutdown date set for June 18th. The poker room will remain operational until that time.
A representative of the Luxor was contacted by telephone as reported by Mehaffey and stated that $17,000 in jackpot pool money still remains available and the money will begin to be distributed among poker players starting on the 27th of this month. $500 high hands will be given away during the day time hours until the jackpot pool is no more. All nine tables at the venue should remain open until the closure date.
With the closure of the Luxor poker room, this marks the third poker room in Las Vegas to close this year. Within a five year time frame, as many as 23 poker rooms have shut down in Sin City.
Is this a sign of how gaming will be in the future? It seems poker gaming revenues remain steady but over the past few years, operators in Las Vegas, Nevada have been looking for ways to appeal to the millennial generation. Advancements in technology are being used to create gaming options that have a level of skill but still offer wagering elements so that visitors will be more enticed to enjoy the games found on the casino floor.
The Millennial generation seem to be more focused on the tech aspect rather than traditional game play found in blackjack, slots and even poker. Gaming companies such as Konami Gaming have created new games for casinos to install that have a level of skill and will appeal to the new visitors to Las Vegas. Konami just released Frogger: Get Hoppin in February and continue to work on additional skill games in the hopes of appealing to the younger generation of visitors to Las Vegas. Other companies are also working on skill games in order to offer something different to visitors of Nevada.
