The 2017 World Series of Poker Colossus Event has come to an end with Thomas Pomponio of New Jersey claiming the first place win. Pomponio was able to outlast a field of 18,054 to win the $1 million first place prize. The event consisted of six starting flights and four days of game play before the gold bracelet was awarded at the Rio in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The large field of competitors created a massive prize pool of $9,027,000 which is the 3rd largest prize pool ever seen at the World Series of Poker. However, the number of entrants was far less than last year and the year before, with more than 21,000 competing in 2016 and over 22,000 in 2015.
Once final table play began, there would be several top competitors in the mix, including Matt Afleck, Ralph Massey and Luke Vrabel. When final table play began, Pomponio would be 4th in chips with the action taking place at a high tempo, decisions coming in just seconds by players.
In the end, it would be Taylor Black and Pomponio duking it out in heads-up play. On the final hand, Black would shove all-in from the button and Pomponio would call quickly. Black showed J-8 off-suit while Pomponio held A-6 offsuit. The flop was no help to Black with Q-Q-4 and Pomponio held a flush draw. With a 3 of clubs on the turn and 7 of spades on the river, Pomponio would earn the win, leaving Black to settle for a second place finish.
Speaking with the WSOP, the new champion stated that the win feels surreal and ever since he was a kid he has dreamed of sitting at the WSOP and holding the gold.
