This past weekend, the late David ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott and Phil Ivey were inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. As part of the ESPN broadcast of the WSOP Main Event, the two men were honored as the 53rd and 54th members of the Poker Hall of Fame.
Ten players and ambassadors of the game were nominated for the award but only two new members are inducted each year based on set criteria. Individuals must be 40 years of age at the time of being nominated as well as having played against acknowledged top competition. Players must have taken part in high-stakes games as well as have the respect of their peers and stood the test of time. Non-players nominated should have contributed to the overall growth of the game in some way.
Ivey was eligible for the Poker Hall of Fame for the first time this year after turning 40 back in February. Many in the industry felt that he would make the cut having been a top player for close to twenty years. Ivey holds 10 World Series of Poker bracelets and has earned over $23 million during tournament game play.
The second inductee, David ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott also had a solid career as a poker player having earned the nickname Devilfish in 1997 as he was a serious competitor and would take out his opponents easily. In early 2015, Ulliott was diagnosed with colon cancer and would pass away just two months later. Many have championed for Ulliott to be inducted since his death and he now managed to earn the proper induction two years later.
The family of the poker pro issued a statement, thanking the general public as well as the media and the current members of the Poker Hall of Fame for voting for David. They are proud and delighted to see David take his rightful place in poker history, as the legend of the Devilfish lives on.
