In late June, Illinois emerged with potential to be the next state in the US to legalize online gaming. Unfortunately, efforts seemed to die away. Now, ahead of two small sessions of legislature in the state, the possibility for online gambling and daily fantasy sports regulation has a slight chance of coming to fruition.
Going back a bit, the month of May saw the state Senate pass a bill that would have legalized daily fantasy sports and online gaming. However, this bill stalled within the House soon after. Now, legislature will be in session for three days in October and three days in November. Starting next week, legislature will be back in session from the 24th to the 26th, for lawmakers to consider bills that were vetoed by the governor. The second such session is set for November 7th to the 9th.
During these two sessions, lawmakers will have the ability to pass other legislation, which could be good news for DFS and online gaming fans. Online Poker Report has revealed they have sources who have suggested that there are three bills to watch during these upcoming sessions.
The first is H 479. This bill was the one that the Senate decided to pass and is currently in the House for concurrence. The second is S 209. This is a measure that will be considered by the House Executive Committee Gaming Subcommittee. S 1531 is the last measure, a bill that moved to the House yesterday and is one of the ways that daily fantasy sports and online gaming can be legalized in the state.
So now, it’s a waiting game to see what lawmakers will do. Will the two small sessions result in legislation moving forward or possibly being passed into law? Only time will tell and we will certainly stay on top of the latest developments as they happen in the coming weeks on the subject.
