Sports Betting USA is a conference that took place this week, on the 14th and 15th in New York City, to discuss the intersection of sports and gaming. The conference covered a wide range of topics including sports betting today, the market evolution since PASPA, sports integrity and more. One outcome of this conference appears to be that the National Basketball Association is now ready to lobby Congress to see sports betting legalized and regulated within the United States. This is a big difference from the NBA’s stance from last year, when they showed opposition to advocating for sports betting.
During the conference, the NBA discussed their intent to lobby for federal framework in Congress. Dan Spillane is the Assistance General Counsel for the NBA as well as the Senior Vice President, who spoke during the event. Mr. Spillane stated that the NBA has advisors in Washington D.C. and legislation they are pulling together with their commissioner, the individual who jumpstarted the conversation, with members of congress being more receptive after the SCOTUS decision.
In the past, the NBA stated they were supportive of federal regulation regarding sports betting, but they would not advocate for it. In the past, Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, has stated that federal sports betting needs to be regulated in the US.
The Sports Betting USA conference comes just weeks before the Supreme Court is set to begin oral arguments in the Christie V. NCAA case. Representatives of New Jersey will be arguing that PASPA is unconstitutional and needs to be overturned. If the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 were to be changed, several states along with New Jersey will be ready to move forward to offer legalized and regulated sports betting services.
A decision by the Supreme Court of the United States is expected to be provided between April and June.
