The online poker market in the United States is quite small. Currently, only New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware offer online poker gaming for real money. In 2015, Delaware and Nevada decided to share poker liquidity, with New Jersey declining to take part at the time. The two smaller states were unsuccessful in their efforts to see their online poker offerings thrive, due to smaller populations. That is all set to change as New Jersey has now decided to join in with player pooling. Beginning on May 1st, New Jersey will join in, sharing poker liquidity with both states.
Caesars Interactive Entertainment announced today that their affiliated poker brands, 888Poker and WSOP, will begin sharing liquidity with Nevada and Delaware beginning on the 1st of May. The online poker sites must still be approved by regulators in all three states, but software is already being tested.
Once the approval is given, poker players in the state of New Jersey will be able to play via poker sites of Nevada and Delaware, and vice versa. To take part, players will have to download software and open a new account to begin with real money game play.
It was last October that Governor Chris Christie announced New Jersey was open to three-way liquidity with Nevada and Delaware. While online casino gaming has been successful in New Jersey, online poker has failed to thrive. Each month, the online poker industry barely meets $1 to $2 million in earnings. With shared player liquidity, New Jersey hopes to see an increase in revenue earnings, helping to push their total online gaming revenues even higher.
It will be interesting to see the revenue totals in each state in the summer months once all three are sharing liquidity. Will it make a big difference in each state? How will revenues be affected?
