After a very strong start to the season, things have been disappointing for the Angels yet again. They are not living up to expectations, and continue to lose game after game. Their pitching is among the worst in the league and Mike Trout hasn’t gotten enough help.
The Dodgers on the other hand have been around .500 the past few weeks after a surge from May 17 to the end of June, where they were baseball’s best team. They remain in first place in a 4-team race in the NL West.

Los Angels Angels
They started the season as one of baseball’s best, but starting with when they got swept by the Red Sox, and Ohtani had his first poor start, everything went downhill for this team. Ohtani is finally back and healthy, but only playing the DH spot, he is not pitching. He launched his 7th home run of the season earlier this week, but that’s about all he is physically able to contribute. Mike Trout, yet again, is looking like an AL MVP candidate, as the pitchers continue to allow run after run, blowing any lead this team can build. Same old story, just a new cast.
They will send Andrew Heaney to the mound for his seventeenth start of the season. He has gone 5-6, posting a 3.84 ERA in 96 innings of work. He has struck out 96 batters, while walking just 29. In his last start, which happened to be against the Dodgers, he allowed three runs on three hits in seven innings of work, while striking out 10 batters. He’s looking to stay consistent.
Los Angels Dodgers
With the Diamondbacks, Giants, and Rockies, all below them, life is good for LA in first place. They are winning enough games to stay atop the division, and they are starting to finally get healthy. Matt Kemp has been swinging a hot bat, as has rookie 1B Max Muncy who has shown signs of being an up-and-coming slugger, as he leads the team with 20 home runs. Now with Clayton Kershaw back, their identity is starting to become more clear. They have hit 26 more home runs than their opponents this year.
They will send Alex Wood to the mound for his nineteenth start of the season. He has gone 5-5, posting a 3.88 ERA in 99 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 88 batters while walking just 18. He allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of work in his last start, against the Angels, on July 8.
Dodgers get their 53rd W, drop Angels back to .500
All will be well for the Dodgers, as they claim victory tonight, and give Alex Wood his sixth victory of the season. He went 16-3 last year and is nowhere near that pace now, but 6-5 is better than 5-6.
Max Muncy and Matt Kemp will both go deep in this contest to help the team’s offense overpower Heaney’s Angels.
