The New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds will begin a series on Monday night at Citi Field. This series will feature a pair of struggling teams, with not much left to play for in 2018. The Mets feature a dominant starting rotation, while the Reds feature one of the best offenses in the National League.
The Cincinnati Reds come into this game in last place in the National League Central Division, but they are showing signs of improvement. The Reds weren’t big “sellers” at the trade deadline as they think they have a roster that can compete moving forward. The Mets have dealt with a ton of injuries in 2018, which has completely derailed their season. The Mets are -164 against the Reds on Monday night.

Syndergaard Makes Start For Mets
Hard-throwing right-hander Noah Syndergaard will start for the Mets in the series opener. “Thor” has dealt with injuries at different times in 2018, but has been very effective when healthy for the Mets. The 25-year old is 6-2 with a 2.98 earned run average in 14 starts for the Mets this season. Syndergaard was recently activated off of the disabled list after contracting the hand, foot, and mouth disease virus. “Thor” will try to slow down a high powered Reds offense.
The Mets were expected to contend in 2018, but have played much of the season without All-Star Yoenis Cespedes. Without Cespedes the Mets rank 28th in total runs scored and have struggled to find consistent offense this season. Asdrubal Cabrera leads the Mets in most offensive categories including his .277 batting average. New York will need to score some runs to keep up with the Reds.
Bailey Hopes To Improve For Reds
The Reds have struggled to find consistent starting pitching, and Homer Bailey is no exception. The veteran right-hander is 1-8 with a 5.87 earned run average this season for the Reds. Bailey is likely pitching for his future with the Reds these last two months, as they have a solid group of young starting pitchers. Bailey will hope to get his August off to a good start against the Mets on Monday night.
Cincinnati features a potent offensive lineup led by Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez. Gennett leads the team with 126 hits and a .310 batting average, and appears to be a permanent fixture in the middle of the Reds lineup. Suarez has had a breakout season in Cincinnati and is in a tight battle for the most RBI’s in the National League. The Reds will try to solve Syndergaard on Monday night.
“Thor,” Mets Win Series Opener
This should be a competitive series between two teams with contrasting styles. The Mets hope that their starting pitching can dictate the series, while the Reds will try to outslug the Mets. Cincinnati has a terrific lineup, but Syndergaard is too good and will keep the Reds offense off the board on Monday night. Look for the Mets to win the series opener.
