Macau to Include Facial Recognition Technology in Casinos

Facial recognition technology could soon become an inevitable part of the casinos in Macau if Leong Sun Iok manages to push it through. He is actually pushing for greater security measures in this area and all the hotels and casinos that exist there and believes that facial recognition will significantly increase the security levels.

According to GGRAsia, Leong sent a letter and the recipient was the Macau Government. In that letter, he expressed his concerns regarding the level of crime that exists in casinos in Macau. He also noticed that the crime is on the increase and that there must be a way to stop that or at least minimize it. According to him, the robberies of the casinos in the first six months of 2018 were increased up to 50%. The data was provided by the Office of the Secretary for Security. This is certainly a worrying number and the officials at Macau definitely have to solve this problem as soon as possible.

In the first six months of 2017, there were a total of six robberies reported in the hotel premises. The same period of 2018 saw a total number of 13 robberies. According to the definition of robbery, it is an act of theft that also has violence or just a threat of violence included in the whole act.

Although some consider that Leong pays too much attention to that, there is no evidence that could actually support the fact that the crime rate is declining. Overall, there is a trend in the world that the number of crimes related to the gaming industry is actually in decline by 3% in year-on-year comparison and there had been a total of 840 cases reported in the last year.

Leong is definitely not going to give up as he stated that it is not the number of crimes that mattered but their impact. He gave an example of two Chinese businessmen in Cotai that were followed to their hotel rooms and robbed after that. This sends a negative image among the potential visitors and affects Macau’s overall image in the world. That is something that could impact their visitors rate in the future.

According to Leong, the crime is usually related more to the outsiders than to the locals. The solution to this problem is to create a blacklist and add all of the unwanted guests there. Using the facial recognition technology, they would be able to see whether some of the blacklisted people are trying to access the premises of Macau.

He believes that facial recognition technology could help Macau in many other ways, one of them being every type of unauthorized individual off the gaming floor, especially during the non-working hours. Civil servants are also not allowed to enter the casino and the system could help with recognizing them as well.

Melco Resorts was the first to install the equipment for facial recognition back in 2015, and they even promised to use the technology if they win the license for building a casino in Japan.
