Friday Night Baseball: New York Mets @ Boston Red Sox

The New York Mets visit Fenway Park in Boston on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm central time. Geographically, the teams are close, however the fact that one team is in the American League and one is in the National League limits any sort of rivalry.

Besides, the big New York rivalry for the Red Sox is with the Yankees. The Mets are having a mediocre season, sitting in fourth place in the National League East division with their 68-78 record. They are close to being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and are 12 and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves, who seem poised to contend for the NL pennant, becoming one of the biggest comeback stories in baseball.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, are arguably the best team in baseball. They are 101-46 on the season and have already clinched a playoff berth. They have been a juggernaut all season long, and seem poised to roll through the playoffs. However, they have shown themselves lately to be a squad which doesn’t perform as well in the playoffs as they do in the regular season. The Red Sox are favored in this matchup: at -133.

Pitching Matchup

Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for the Mets. MLB.com had this to say about him:

“In his last outing vs. the Phils, Thor took a scary screamer back to his right side, forcing his exit in the 7th. But X-rays were negative, and he aims to bounce back in hopes of achieving another strong start, such as his CG vs. S.F. on Sept. 2.”

Syndergaard is 11-3 on the year. His ERA also stands at 3.44, which could point to a reliance on run support.

Hector Velazquez is pitching for the Red Sox. According to MLB.com:

“The righty will make his eighth spot start of the season. In his seven previous starts, Velazquez is 2-2 with a 4.00 ERA. Velazquez has pitched well at Fenway Park this season, going 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 18 appearances.”

His record stands at 7-2 on the year, and his ERA is 3.29.

New York Mets

Brandon Nimmo is leading the way offensively for the Mets. He is hitting .268 on the year, and has driven in 44 runs through his 125 games played. Look for him to make an impact on this game.

Boston Red Sox

Mookie Betts, as he has all season, is in the midst of the MVP conversation. He is hitting .340 on the season and has driven in 71 runs. In the power department, J.D. Martinez is leading for Boston. He has driven in 122 runs and has hit 41 home runs.

Red Sox Top Mets

This season, it is hard to bet against the Red Sox. This season has been a string of winning streaks, only interrupted by a few losses here and there. They have a powerful lineup, a good starter, and a good bullpen. They should be able to dispatch the Mets fairly easily. Bet on the Boston Red Sox at -133.
