Both Teams Coming Off Victories
Virginia Tech is coming off a 52-49 victory over Georgia Tech in their last game. Ahmed Hill led the Hokies in scoring with 15 points on 6/14 shooting. Kerry Blackshear Jr. had a great game, scoring 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to get a double-double. Justin Robinson was another Hokie in double figures as he tallied 10 points. Nickiel Walker Alexander was the leading assist man for the Hokies as he had 6 assists to go along with 4 points and 4 rebounds but shot just 1/13 from the field. The defense was the story for Virginia Tech though as they held their opponent to less than 50 points which is a great recipe for success.
Virginia is coming off a 63-43 victory at Clemson on Saturday. Kyle Guy led the Cavaliers in scoring with 13 points but shot just 5/15 from the field. Deandre Hunter was the next highest scorer with 12 points to go along with 7 rebounds. Braxton Key grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the team and scored 8 points. Ty Jerome was the leading assister on Saturday, tallying 5 assists to go along with 8 points and 3 rebounds. Defense was also the key in this one for the Cavaliers as it usually is, as they held Clemson to just 43 points which will almost always earn you a victory.
Walker-Alexander Leads Virginia Tech
Nickeil Walker-Alexander is the main man for Virginia Tech this year, averaging 17.8 points per game. Three other Hokies average double figures in scoring. Kerry Blackshear Jr. scores 14.1 a game, Justin Robinson pours in 13.1 a game, and Ahmed Hill adds 12.7 points per game. The big man Blackshear Jr. leads the Hokies in rebounds with 6.2 a game. Robinson is the floor general for this team, and he averages 5.8 assists per game. The Hokies have been incredible on both ends this season, averaging 79.2 points per game on 50% shooting and they hold their opponents to just 57.3 points a game. They will have a tough task keeping their scoring numbers up against a prolific Virginia defense.
Sharpshooter Kyle Guy is the leading scorer for this Virginia squad, scoring 15.3 points per game. Guy is followed by Deandre Hunter, who averages 14 a game. Ty Jerome is the only other Cavalier averaging double figures with 13.1 a game. Braxton Key leads the Cavaliers in rebounding with 5.9 boards a game. Ty Jerome is the leading assist man and averages 4.4 helpers per game. Virginia has been incredible on defense as they are year in and year out, holding opponents to just 51.2 points per game. Their offense has been solid as well, scoring 73.8 points a game on 47.4% shooting.
Virginia Tech vs. Virginia Prediction
Virginia comes in at -8.5. These two teams are evenly matched on both ends of the floor. Virginia Tech has been a little better offensively this year and have been spectacular on defense as well. They say that defense travels and I think the Hokies will be able to shut down this Virginia team offensively for the most part and will be able to get some big buckets against the stellar defense of Virginia. The Hokies have a chance to win this game outright if they shoot the ball well enough. Take Virginia Tech +8.5.
