The defending Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals are in a battle with the Carolina Hurricanes in their first-round playoff series. Washington comes into Game 6 with a chance to close out the series and move on to round two, but this won’t be easy. The Capitals lost the first two games in Carolina by a combined score of 7-1.
Washington has played extremely well at home so far in this series, but they have been a mess on the road. The Capitals know that they will have Game 7 back on their home ice, but they want to close out this series in Game 6. Carolina has been a worthy opponent in this series, and they are hoping to force a decisive Game 7.
The Hurricanes are -115 over the Washington Capitals in Game 6 of this series.
Capitals Must Score on Road
The Washington Capitals averaged 3.34 points per game during the regular season, but their offense hasn’t shown up on the road in this series. Washington has plenty of offensive talent, but they haven’t found their rhythm yet in Carolina. Nicklas Backstrom has already recorded eight points in this postseason, and he put on a show in Game 5. If the Capitals can get an early goal, their offense might break out for a huge game.
Goaltender Braden Holtby has been up-and-down so far in this series, but he is capable of completely shutting down the Hurricanes. Holtby has stopped 92 percent of the shots that he has faced but did allow seven goals in the two losses in Carolina. The Capitals gave up more than three goals per game during the regular season, and defense isn’t their strength. Washington will need to be solid on both ends of the ice to win this game.
Carolina Wants To Slow Game Down
The Carolina Hurricanes know that they can’t keep up with the Washington Capitals, and they will try to control the puck. Carolina gave up six goals in their Game 5 loss, and they had no answer for the Capitals’ offense. Goaltender Petr Mrazek has posted a stellar 2.81 goals-against average so far in this series and has been much better at home. If the Hurricanes can hold the Capitals to three goals or less, they have a shot.
The Hurricanes don’t have a true offensive star, but they do have plenty of depth. Warren Foegele leads the team with three goals so far in this postseason, but he has had plenty of support. Carolina averaged just 2.96 goals per game this season, and their offense won’t be able to outscore the Capitals.
Hurricanes Force Game 7
The Washington Capitals know how to close out a series, but they have been a terrible road team this season. The Capitals just don’t seem as locked in as they were a season ago, and that is going to cost them in Game 6. Carolina has been impressive at home, and they are going to get a third straight home win. Bet the Carolina Hurricanes -115 over the Washington Capitals in this game.
