The United States Women’s National Team has had little trouble through their first four games at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, but things are about to change. The USWNT will be taking on France in the quarterfinal round, and the French team is looking to protect home soil. Team USA is 17-3-3 all-time against France, but history won’t play a role in what happens on the field on Friday.
The USWNT absolutely dominated in the group stage, winning all three of its games by a combined score of 18-0. The United States struggled a bit in its round of 16 win over Spain but advanced with a 2-1 victory. France also went 3-0 during their play in Group A, but all of their games were extremely tight. The French team was able to sneak past Brazil with a 2-1 victory earlier in the week to set up this epic showdown. The United States is +125 to win this game, while France checks in at +210.
Time For Morgan to Shine
If the United States is going to advance past France in this game, forward Alex Morgan is going to have to step up. Morgan scored five goals and had three assists in the first game of this tournament but has been held in check ever since. Megan Rapino stepped up in the win over Spain, converting on a pair of penalty kicks to give the USWNT the edge. The United States is known for its offense, and that offense will need to find the back of the net a few times in this game.
Alyssa Naeher has replaced Hope Solo in net for the USWNT, and she has done alright so far in this tournament. Naeher has allowed just one goal so far in the first four games but has also only made just four saves. Midfielder Julie Ertz has been battling an injury throughout this tournament, and the USWNT will need her to be sharp against an aggressive France team.
France Has Some Offense As Well
Most of the talk will be about the offense of the USWNT, but France has a pair of talented forwards as well. Eugenie Le Sommer has netted a goal already in this tournament and has scored 74 goals in international play. She is just seven goals away from setting a new record in France. Amandine Henry is another accomplished player on this France roster, and she could break through at any time.
Sarah Bouhaddi will be in goal for the France team in this game, and she has earned the nickname “Stonewall” in her country. Bouhaddi is an extremely decorated goalkeeper who has played well so far throughout the tournament. France has kept some very potent offensives quiet already in this tournament and could do the same against the United States.
US Sneaks Past France
Many people believe that France has the best shot at upsetting the United States, but we just don’t see that happening. France hasn’t looked very convincing so far during this Women’s World Cup, and playing on home soil won’t give them enough of an edge. The USWNT has the potential to score a ton of goals, and they will get just enough to get past France. Bet the United States +125 over host France in this quarterfinal matchup.
