The rebuilding Mariners made some moves at the deadline, sending multiple relievers to the Nationals in an effort to allow younger guys to take on more of a serious role and give their own guys a chance to compete for a playoff spot in DC. They are a team that still bristles with great hitting, but they’re not trying to win much. They want to be much better in the years to come, as they look to break their playoff drought, which has extended all the way back to 2001.
Houston, on the other hand, now has the best 1-2-3-4 rotation in all of baseball, and they will be looking to continue to rack up the wins. We did not expect them to add an additional starter but just to rub it in the Yankees’ face, they went and brought in the top arm on the market in Zack Greinke. This is a squad that does not look like it is going to be stopped, and the wins should continue to come.
The moneyline on the Mariners is at +230, while it is -270 for the Astros. The over/under is set at 10.
Mariners Try To Slow Down Houston
Just like the Yankees, the Mariners have had to place numerous key contributors on the IL this year, with the list currently comprised of 13 names. Domingo Santana has been the leader of the offense with 21 HRs and 67 RBI, while young DH Daniel Vogelbach has 25 long balls and 64 runs batted in. Catcher Omar Narvaez has been quietly effective with a .296 average, 16 dingers and 41 runs batted in over 92 appearances. Starting pitching has been a weak point for these Mariners, though. They sent Mike Leake to Arizona at the trade deadline.
Yusei Kikuchi is set to make his 23rd start of the season tonight. The 28-year-old has posted a 4-7 record with a 5.21 ERA in 114 innings of work. He has struck out 83 batters while walking a team-high 38.
Astros Looking For Continued Success
They have not been slowed by injuries or anybody on their schedule. Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel are leading the way, each with over 65 RBI on the season, producing effectively. George Springer is back and launching home runs again, up to 25 for the season now. Jose Altuve is hitting over .300 as we have grown used to seeing him do, his health playing a huge part in the hot run for the Astros of late.
Wade Miley is set to make his 23rd start of the season tonight. He has posted a 9-4 record with a 3.06 ERA in 126 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 106 batters while walking 40.
