Sunday is the final game of a three-game set in the Battle of the Titans between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. So far this series, it has had all the feels of a late-October playoff atmosphere. The Yankees won the first game in convincing fashion and then lost the second game in questionable fashion. Gleyber Torres scored what looked to be the tying run in the top of the 9th until the umpire called time as he was halfway down the third baseline. Regardless, this series has been terrific, and if this is what the Fall Classic turns out to be, we’re all in for a treat.
Probable Pitchers
For the Yankees, Domingo German will get the start for the 22nd time this season. In Luis Severino’s absence, German has more than stepped up to the plate to be the team’s ace. German is 16-3 on the season and has a very real chance to win 20 games. That is if the Yankees don’t shut him down before then. He currently has pitched 121 innings this season, which is the most in any season in his professional career, except in single-A ball in 2014 when he threw 123. German had a rough game last time out, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) to the Oakland A’s in what turned out to be his first loss since June 7th. The thing German really needs to work on his limiting the home run ball. His HR/FB% is over 20, which is simply egregious. His HR/9 is at 2.00, and he hasn’t had a start without giving up a homer in his last eight tries.
For the Dodgers, the iconic Clayton Kershaw will take the mound yet again. Kershaw is having another insane year yet again. The former top-ten pick is 13-2 on the season with a 2.71 earned run average. In 22 starts this season, Kershaw has never pitched less than six innings in any game. That is just absolutely mind-boggling. Somehow, the stats get even crazier as well. Kershaw literally has not lost a decision at home this entire season. That’s right– a perfect 9-0 record with a 2.42 ERA in Dodger Stadium.
Batters To Watch
Throw a dart at anyone in the Yankees lineup, and you probably found a guy that’ll hit 25 homers and drive in 80 plus runs. An even scarier thought for opposing teams is that it looks like Aaron Judge is starting to heat up. He has 10 hits in his last 6 games, including two home runs and three doubles.
Dodgers batter to watch? Is there any other answer other than Cody Bellinger? The NL MVP front runner (along with Christian Yelich) is having a monster year. He’s batting .314 and has hit 42 home runs and has already eclipsed the 100 RBI mark. Even scarier for the Yankees is most of that damage is done at home. He has a .321 average in Dodger Stadium with 24 of his home runs and 52 of his RBIs.
The Pick
Clayton Kershaw can’t be touched at home, or anywhere this season really. Couple that with German’s 5.82 road ERA, and this looks to be a Dodger win. Take LA.
