St. Louis has been playing its best baseball of the season of late, coming into this series having won eight of its past 10. They got some help from the Nationals, who swept the Cubs in their weekend series to put the Cardinals 2.5 games up in the NL Central. This is a tight division which will only get closer if the Cards do not handle their business in this series.
Milwaukee has one of the game’s premier players in Christian Yelich, but he is not enough to defeat other squads on his own. He and Mike Moustakas have been hammering the ball, but this team is in a funk right now. The losses have piled up, and they have been losing some ground in the Wild Card race. Both teams ahead of them in their own division are currently slotted in as playoff teams.
The moneyline for the Brewers is set at -124, while it is +110 for the underdog Cardinals. The over/under is set at 9.5 runs.
Trying To Keep Rolling
Having gone 8-2 in their past 10 games, another successful series for the Cardinals could deal a powerful blow to the Brewers’ chances. We still have more than a month left in the regular season but currently 4.5 games ahead of their opponents in this series, wins over the Brewers would be massive for the Cardinals. Paul Goldschmidt has stayed hot, his HR total now up to 29, his RBI total at 69. Marcell Ozuna has continued to produce runs, while Paul DeJong has been dominant of late. Power-wise, it is one of the best seasons a Cardinals shortstop has ever had.
Adam Wainwright is set to make his 25th start of the season. He has gone 9-9 with a 4.51 ERA in 131 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 126 batters while walking 54. Wainwright is 1-1 vs. MIL in two starts this season.
Brewers Look To Dig Deep
The Brewers absolutely need to win at least two of three games in this series, as well as their next one. They have nothing but games against divisional opponents this week, and a losing record will not only slash their confidence but their playoff chances as well. Yelich will likely continue to hit like he has, but who is going to join him in stepping up to take care of business when they need it most? Keston Hiura has continued to impress and has cemented himself into the NL Rookie of the Year race. If he can continue to hit the ball like he has, while getting help too, they have a chance.
Gio Gonzalez is set to make his 13th start of the season tonight. Gonzalez has posted a 2-1 record with a 3.64 ERA in 59 1/3 innings of work. He has struck out 53 while walking 24 and has not beaten STL in his last four starts.
Cardinals Pick Up The Road Win
Led by Goldschmidt’s 30th dinger of the season, a win is coming for the Cardinals tonight.
