It’s hard to believe that when these teams last met, both were in such different positions. The Mets had won 13 of 14 games heading into the series and then took the first two. They nearly knocked the Nationals off their perch atop the NL Wild Card race, but they would fall in the third and final game of the series. They stayed hot after that for a while, before a recent six-game skid has put their playoff chances in jeopardy.
The Nationals have continued to be the hottest team in baseball after their poor start. From their season-low point (10 games under .500), they have seen a 29-game improvement. They just need to continue doing their thing for a little longer, and they will eventually clinch their spot in the playoffs. If they cannot get the job done against the Mets this week though, a whole lot of things can change with the postseason race.
The moneyline for the Nationals today is set at +100, while it is -114 for the Mets. The over/under is set at 9.5 runs.
Mets Desperately Need Wins
Coming off their loss to the Phillies in the series finale Sunday night, the Mets will find things only get tougher from here. The week that the Mets have is ultimately going to determine what their fate is. They have three games with the Nationals here and follow it up with a day off and then three more against the Phillies. Pete Alonso is continuing to mash the ball, with a few others young pieces for the Mets performing well. But they have a weak bench and a lack of consistent bats in their starting lineup. Starting pitching can only do so much for you.
They will be sending Noah Syndergaard to the mound for his 27th start of the season today. Thor has gone 9-7 with a 4.14 ERA in 163 innings of work. He has struck out 161 batters while walking 43.
Nationals Try To Keep Rolling
After a weekend sweep of the Marlins, Washington is feeling good. Juan Soto and Anthony Rendon are both dominating opposing pitchers, while other guys are stepping up. Rendon has 32 home runs and 111 RBI with a .337 batting average. They just got Ryan Zimmerman, who has been banged up all year, off the IL, giving them a good platoon with him and Matt Adams. Their starting pitching has been magnificent, while their bullpen seems to be improving with time.
Joe Ross has served more as a reliever than a starter for the Nationals this year, but he’s set to continue beginning games, making his seventh of the year (25th appearance). Ross has gone 3-3 with a 5.36 ERA in 50 1/3 innings. He has been turning it around though. He has 41 strikeouts to 26 walks.
Nationals Come Away With Win
Another DC victory! Juan Soto and Victor Robles will power the Nats to the win as Syndergaard is handed his eighth loss.
