So far, so good for Arizona State, even though it is 0-1 in Pac-12 play. Outside of the conference, the Sun Devils have gotten off to a 3-0 start, so there is not much to complain about. Plenty of Herm Edwards skeptics have existed since he was hired, but they are quiet right now as he has his team off to a strong start this year, eager to prove that it is no fluke as they have a nationally-ranked test this week.
No. 15 California, on the other hand, is feeling even more confident than its opponents. Justin Wilcox’s team is winning its games by an average of seven points and allowing less than 20 per game, allowing the offense some time to grow. This is a team that is hoping to continue to move forward and forget about the 7-6 record they put together in 2018. No issues and no roadblocks just yet, but things will not be easy for them this week.
The Golden Bears are favored by 4.5 points, while the over/under is set at 40.
Sun Devils Look For Fourth Win
Quarterback Jayden Daniels has been putting in the work for the Sun Devils, but he will need to really sling the ball to put his team in position to win this week. Through four games, he has five touchdowns to just one pick, and he’s thrown for 1,073 yards. He is completing 61.2 percent of his passes and has added one score on the ground. Eno Benjamin has rushed for 292 yards and three scores, taking the bulk of the carries. They will need him to continue to be on his A-game, and pick up some big yards against Cal.
The pass rush has been good so far, with three players tied for the team lead with 1.5 sacks each, but somebody is going to have to apply serious pressure on Chase Garbers this week and put him on the ground a good few times.
Cal Tries To Stay Perfect
The Golden Bears are yet to be defeated this year, and their defense has been a huge reason why. They have surrendered just 17.2 points per contest, winning games by an average of seven, as their offense has yet to really take off. Kuony Deng and Luc Baguette each have 2.5 sacks so far and will be looking to improve their totals this week in a big way. Traveon Beck has been a big part of the strong secondary performance, and that is probably not slowing down any time soon.
Garbers has tossed seven touchdowns to just two picks thus far and is looking to improve those numbers further, too. He only completes 57.3 percent of his passes, so a lack of accuracy could doom them against a stout Sun Devils D. Look for Christopher Brown Jr. and his 335 yards to tear it up too.
Cal Stays Perfect
This will be an entertaining battle, to say the least, but a win is coming for California.
