The Hot Stove NFL season continues to move and shake as players are signing deals left and right.
Brees Staying In New Orleans
One of the greatest to ever play the quarterback position is staying on Bourbon Street. Drew Brees inked a two-year, $50 million contract to continue his run with Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints.
The NFL’s career completion percentage leader even took less money, according to Ian Rappaport, to allow the team to put some pieces around him. Despite being 40 years of age and hampered by injuries last season, Brees completed 74.3% of his passes and threw 27 touchdowns against only four interceptions in 11 games.
Bridgewater Signs With Panthers
Teddy Bridgewater was thought to be one of the third or fourth quarterback dominoes to fall in the offseason. Instead, the former Minnesota starter and Saints backup inked a deal before Tom Brady, Ryan Tannehill and Philip Rivers by signing with the Panthers.
The Panthers have given franchise quarterback Cam Newton permission to seek out a trade following the end of the Ron Rivera era. Bridgewater was 5-0 as the starter for the Saints last season, tossing nine touchdown passes against only two interceptions while filling in for the injured Brees.
Bridgewater’s deal is for three years and $60 million.
Mariota Joins Raiders
In a move that has been rumored since nearly two weeks ago, the Las Vegas Raiders signed Marcus Mariota. The 26-year-old former Titan appeared in seven games last season, starting six before being replaced by the surprising Tannehill.
The 2015 Heisman Trophy winner has been mediocre in his career at just 29-32 and will compete with Derek Carr for the starting quarterback position as Jon Gruden continues to mold the Raiders into his vision.
It should be noted that Ian Rappaport reported that Raiders GM Mike Mayock was very high on Mariota when he came to the NFL. According to Sports Illustrated, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Bears Add Quinn To Pass Rush
The Chicago Bears may still be courting possible quarterbacks for the 2020 season, but that didn’t stop them from going hard after a difference-maker on the defensive line. Chicago signed former Cowboy Robert Quinn to a five-year, $70 million deal on Tuesday with $30 million guaranteed.
The 29-year-old defensive end recorded 11.5 sacks last season, the most since his 19 sacks in 2013.
The Bears ranked just 24th in the league in 2019 with 32 sacks after ranking third in the league with 50 in 2018. The addition of Quinn gives them the upside to once again be the best in the NFL at getting to the quarterback.
Other Big Moves
Some other moves that may have flown under the radar from the last couple of days
- Austin Hooper signed with the Browns. Hooper has the upside to be one of the best tight ends in the NFL.
- Jamie Collins signed with the Detroit Lions, marking the second time that he has left the New England Patriots. Collins is the playmaker on the defensive side of the ball that the Lions needed.
- The Atlanta Falcons replaced Hooper by trading for former Baltimore tight end Hayden Hurst. The 6-4 South Carolina product recorded 30 receptions and 349 receiving yards in his second season with the Ravens in 2019.
