It is not an easy task to win a bracelet event. And we see Orhan Ates go where no Turkish player has ever gone before. And that place is the top, a first-place finish. It was one that is rather surprising given his standing prior to the match taking place.
After twelve long hours, Ates finally came away victorious, knocking off Tobias Schwecht heads-up. The field drew a whopping 3,170 entries and a prize pool of over $1.5 million. This was no small event, and so to go from having never finished higher than 26th in a WSOP event, to a six-figure prize of over $180,000, it’s wild.
Said 26th-place finish netted him a little under $12,000. Look at that glow up. The cash prize he won is still not the most he’s ever made in an event, though, as he brought home third-place at an event in Cyprus in 2018.
Closing the Door
Ates hit a lucky river, which helped him to eliminate the always tough Renato Ribeiro. He over shoved when Ribeiro had his last five big blinds pushed to get the last one out of the way. He flopped trying to win using the sixes, and it led to his untimely finish.
Ates best opponent here was Tobias Schwecht, who helped by taking several opponents out for him before ultimately bowing out to Ates himself. Ates pulled off one final huge move to secure his victory and his historic WSOP bracelet victory.
He found the miracle queen on the river and gave him one of the two outs he had to win the tournament. It was exactly the move that needed to happen, and help Ates make some serious history.
The first Turkish player to ever win a WSOP bracelet, he made sure to take event #60 and make it his. And now he’s got more than just the $180,000 to take with him. He has his country pride being the first to ever come away victorious. And this just leaves you wondering when he will break through again.
It took long enough for the first win, and now the pressure is on him trying to keep these types of finishes up. Or if we find out it was just a one-off.
