Mid-week MACTION is coming back on Tuesday as two teams on opposite ends of the standings meet. Akron has gotten destroyed in both of their games, while Kent State has opened up with a pair of victories.
The Zips lost to Western Michigan by 45 points in their first game before falling by 14 to Ohio. In those two defeats, they have been outscored by a score of 82-23. That is not pretty no matter how you slice it. If they’d like to see any sort of success this year, a win will have to come in this one. And it isn’t very likely.
Kent State was able to take down Eastern Michigan in a tight game to open the season before lighting up Bowling Green State for 62 points last week. They could not be stopped, and if they play their cards right, they could have a similar showing in this game. The offense that Sean Lewis is employing seems to be working “pretty” well so far. Let’s see if it continues for another week.
Odds
The Golden Flashes are heavy-favorites, projected to win by 23.5 points. The over/under is set at 59.5.
Zips Trying to Get a Hold on Their Season
Two games in, and we have minimal positives to point out about the Zips. They hired coach Tom Arth prior to the beginning of the 2019 season. The team went 0-12 and averaged a horrid 10.5 points per game. Being 0-2 this season, they are still looking for their first win under his watch. This is not a fun team to be associated with right now.
First-year starting QB Zach Gibson has amassed 243 yards, throwing for two touchdowns and three interceptions this season. Teon Dollard has rushed for an impressive 232 yards already, but the offense isn’t producing much. Gibson’s TD passes have been the only touchdowns the team has scored at all on the year.
They have allowed 403 rushing yards already, something that could doom them from the first defensive snap. Kent State Looks to dominate.
Favored by more than three touchdowns, the Golden Flashes should be able to win big at home. QB Dustin Crum has been fantastic thus far, with two great starts under his belt. He has thrown for 490 yards and six touchdowns, with just one interception. And they have gotten some nice production between their two-headed rushing attack.
Something that they should be able to do in this game that they haven’t yet is find a receiver that’s in a rhythm and keep feeding them the ball. Because of the large size of their leads over the first two games, Zach Gibson hasn’t been able to lock in on any one receiver.
In all, the Golden Flashes have over 1,000 yards of offense in just eight quarters. Their average yards-per-quarter stands at 125. Not too shabby at all for Sean Lewis’ team.
