The New England Patriots and New York Giants have had joint practices leading up to their third and final preseason game. Those practices have seen some contentious moments, including some involving rookie quarterback Mac Jones. And these teams will finish their preseason work against one another on Sunday, as Jones will lead the Patriots into a game where he has his last chance to prove himself before the season begins.
New England Patriots Betting Preview
The Patriots have won each of their first two preseason games, beating the Washington Football Team and Philadelphia Eagles by a combined score of 57-13. Mac Jones has looked impressive in each of his first two preseason outings, completing 13 of his 19 passes in each of his first two games. Most importantly, he hasn’t turned the ball over in either of his first two preseason games, which bodes well for his future.
Jones has been the subject of some controversy this week, as he has been very aggressive and vocal during the joint practices with the Giants. He ran over a defender and started an altercation after shouting at that defender after the fact, which can be viewed as a positive or a negative depending on the mindset of the beholder. But one thing that cannot be questioned is Jones’ tenacity so far.
New York Giants Betting Preview
For the New York Giants, the preseason has not appeared to be much of a priority, as they have been beaten by the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns. In those two games, the Giants have scored a combined 20 points, and have looked completely disinterested in scoring points during those contests. The problem for the Giants is the fact that their first-string offense may not be any better than the offense they’ve run in the preseason.
There is a legitimate concern that Daniel Jones isn’t the answer at quarterback for the Giants, even with the new skill position players that the team has added around him. Kenny Golladay and Kyle Rudolph should make things a little easier on Jones than they were last year, but quarterbacking is just as much about talent as it is about the weapons around the quarterback. This year will go a long way toward determining where Jones stands in that department.
Fortunately, the Giants appear to be on track to have another strong defensive season in 2021. They have allowed just 29 points in their first two preseason games, and look poised to follow up on a 2020 season where their defense kept them in the playoff hunt far longer than their offense did.
The Pick: Patriots -3
This preseason, the Patriots have appeared to take things way more seriously than the Giants. New York’s backups at the quarterback position just aren’t positioned to score many points, which should mean another poor showing in their final exhibition contest.
The Patriots, meanwhile, have multiple quarterbacks who appear capable of putting up points, and they should cover the spread in this game as a result.
