The Suns and Rockets going head to head would normally mean things would be one-sided, right? In this NBA, where one team is favored to win and dominate. But, the weekend has been full of upsets and surprises, so perhaps, the folks in Houston are going to have something to say between tip-off and the end of it.
With DeAndre Ayton out, a star has emerged of the Phoenix Suns bench, a guy that has been an unlikely hero. Frank Kaminsky has been tremendous for this team while serving as the backup for JaVale McGee. He scored 29 the other night and is showing that he has a whole lot to offer, even if his playing time will not be there when they are at full strength. He has given them new life.
Houston, on the other side, has been losing a lot and did so to the Pistons on ESPN earlier in the week. And it really is too bad that John Wall will not be taking the court for them. The reasoning does make sense, but with all the injuries he had to overcome to continue his career, it is a shame that he’s just going to be a healthy scratch all season long.
If they want to break out of their long skid, they need to limit turnovers and get their defense right to work.
Betting Odds & Lines
The spread for Sunday night is favoring visiting PHX -8.5. The over/under is 222.5 points. The PHX line is -382; the HOU line is set at +295.
Suns Look to Improve to 9-3
The expectations for Phoenix were very high coming into this season after they finished just two wins away from an NBA title a year ago. They won 53 of 72 regular-season contests and swept Denver en route to making it to the finals for the first time in a heck of a long while.
They brought back Chris Paul with a new contract while also re-signing Mikal Bridges. They have not agreed to terms with DeAndre Ayton yet, but perhaps if they can win even more than last year, they can find it within themselves to cough up the dough.
If the Suns want a win here, they should give the ball to Devin Booker and watch him work.
Houston Trying to Find Way to Win
Losing has been the custom for the Rockets this year, as it was in 2020-21. And while they would be wise to just lose a lot for a better draft pick again, they need to at some point win some contests with Jalen Green. It is all about setting up the culture and letting these guys know they can win games.
The more they lose now, the worse off they will be. Getting draft picks to build around is never a bad thing, but the culture it creates and the losing habits that type of activity breeds are never spoken about.
They will have a hard time.
Suns Win
PHX will get it done on the road, improving to 9-3. 30 for Booker.
