On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Angels (29-33) face the Los Angeles Dodgers (37-21) in the first of a two-game interleague series. Noah Syndergaard will take the mound for the Angels, looking for his sixth win. Tony Gonsolin will pitch for the Dodgers.
Last year’s series saw each team win three games out of six, and the freeway series should be another fun one. The Dodgers will be home favorites, with most sportsbooks having them as -1.5 favorites on the run line, with the total at 8.5 runs.
Angels Break Skid
The Los Angeles Angels have been struggling of late, sitting third in the American League West with a 29-33 record. For the Halos, it had been a bad run of games as they concluded a 14-game losing streak. They’ve been slumping on both sides of the ball and won only one of their three games against the Mets this past weekend resulted in a win.
They’ll send righty Noah Syndergaard to pitch in this game with a little additional rest after a loss to the Boston Red Sox in which he went six innings and gave up a run on five hits with a hit by pitch, a walk, and three strikeouts.
He pitched well but suffered the loss due to a lack of support from the offense. The veteran right-hander has pitched well in two of his last three starts, with a 3.69 ERA and 1.19 WHIP to go along with a 4-4 record in 46.1 innings.
The Angels are averaging 4.39 runs per game, which ranks them 15th in the league. The pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.92, which ranks them 17th in the Major Leagues.
Dodgers Hope to Get Back on Track
The Los Angeles Dodgers have also suffered recently, but they are still tied for first place in the National League West with a 37-23 record. Right-hander Tony Gonsolin will take the mound for them, coming off a victory over the Chicago White Sox in which he pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits with a hit by pitch, a walk, and five strikeouts.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been one of the finest hitting teams in baseball, ranking second in the majors with a .751 OPS and a 5.15 run per game average. Mookie Betts, the team’s right fielder, it one of the hottest players in baseball with an .892 OPS with 16 home runs and 39 RBI.
After a 2-4 road trip, the Dodgers return home but have come under fire with their poor play. They took two of three from the White Sox but were swept by San Francisco on the road over the weekend due to a lack of scoring.
With 5.15 runs per game, the Dodgers lead the Majors. The pitching staff has a 3.08 team ERA, which ranks them third in the majors.
Pick and Prediction
After that awful losing skid, the Angels are playing much better, while the Dodgers are trending in the wrong direction. They’ve gone 4-9 in their last 13 games, including a home sweep by the Pirates a few weeks ago and a weekend sweep by the Giants.
Noah Syndergaard, the Angels’ starter, is also throwing effectively. Syndergaard has gone 1-3 with a 7.88 ERA in four road starts this season, while Gonsolin has gone 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in five home appearances.
The Angels have gone 1-5 in their last six games at Dodger Stadium, so take the Los Angeles Dodgers in this one.
