MLB’s primetime game on Sunday night is a rivalry game between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees are listed as road favorites on Sunday night with a moneyline of -130, while Boston’s moneyline is set at +110. The game also has an over/under of nine runs.
The Yankees took the first two games of the series before losing to the Red Sox on Saturday night. That loss has the Yankees are just 5-3 since the calendar flipped to July. Nevertheless, they have the best record in baseball and a commanding 15-game lead atop the AL East.
The Red Sox have the honor of being the second-place team in the AL East, 15 games off the pace. The good news is that Saturday’s win snapped a four-game losing streak. However, the Red Sox are still just 4-8 over their last 12 games.
Just in the Nick of Time
Nick Pivetta will start Sunday’s game, giving the Red Sox a fighting chance of earning a series split. In his first 17 starts of the season, Pivetta is 8-6 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. The catch is that he got lit up for seven runs in 5.2 innings in his last start, although Pivetta allowed two runs or less in nine of his previous 11 outings.
The Red Sox are also starting to come around offensively, scoring at least five runs in three straight games and at least four runs in six of their last seven games. As expected, the trio of Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, and J.D. Martinez has carried the load for Boston. Trevor Story has also contributed three home runs in his last seven games, although the rest of the Boston lineup has struggled, hurting the Red Sox depth.
Tie One On
The Yankees will counter Pivetta and the Boston lineup with Jameson Taillon, who’s been one of their best starters this year. In 16 starts, he’s 9-2 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. However, Taillon has hit a rough patch in his season, as his ERA has jumped from 2.70 to 3.63 over his last three starts, with Taillon giving up 14 earned runs over his last 16 innings of work.
Of course, after going through a mini-slump earlier this week, the Yankees are heating up again, scoring 39 runs over their last four games. Aaron Judge has been the team’s MVP this season, although Matt Carpenter has made a tremendous impact since joining the team. In fact, Carpenter, Aaron Hicks, and Gleyber Torres are all scorching hot right now, giving Judge plenty of support behind him.
Split the Bill
The Yankees surely deserve to be favored in this game, although Taillon’s struggles over his last three starts are concerning, especially since the Red Sox have a potent lineup. With Pivetta on the mound, the Red Sox also have a chance to avoid getting into a high-scoring game with the Yankees. Given the circumstances, it’s worth taking a chance on the Red Sox as underdogs on Sunday night.
