Sunday’s MLB schedule concludes with an AL East rivalry game between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, which will be played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, amidst the Little League World Series. The betting odds are tight, with Baltimore’s moneyline listed at -105 and Boston’s moneyline set at -115. The over/under for the game is set at nine runs.
Despite getting themselves into the playoff race, the Orioles head into Sunday’s game with three losses in their last four games. With just four wins in their last ten games, Baltimore has cooled off considerably. However, the Orioles remain four games over .500 and just 2.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot in the American League.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are barely hanging around the periphery of the playoff picture. They are a game under .500 and five games out of a playoff spot. On the bright side, with a win on Sunday, the Red Sox will win their third straight series and create some positive momentum heading into two more series against AL East rivals next week.
Little Nicky
Nick Pivetta will get the start for Boston on Sunday in front of the little leaguers in Williamsport. Pivetta has brought some stability to the Boston rotation this year, going 9-9 with a 4.28 ERA over 24 starts. He’s coming off one of his best starts of the season, tossing seven scoreless innings against the Pirates, although the Red Sox are just 3-5 in his last eight starts since the beginning of July.
The good news is the Red Sox have started to find some rhythm offensively, averaging 5.8 runs per game over their last five games. Unfortunately, both Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts find themselves in the midst of slumps, which is bad news for the Red Sox. However, Christian Arroyo, Alex Verdugo, and trade deadline acquisition Tommy Pham have provided a spark over the past week to give the Boston lineup a boost.
Baltimore’s Dean
The Orioles will send Dean Kremer to the mound for Sunday’s game. The 26-year-old has made 13 starts this year, going 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA. After enduring a troublesome month of July, Kremer has started to settle into a groove in August, pitching to a 2.84 ERA over his last starts, although the Orioles have only won one of his last five starts.
Meanwhile, the Orioles have cooled off with the bats lately, scoring two runs or less in four of their last eight games. On the other hand, Baltimore churned out 15 runs in Friday’s win over the Red Sox, so there are plenty of capable hitters in Baltimore’s lineup. Adley Rutschman and Ramon Urias are both red-hot at the moment, although some of Baltimore’s other key hitters are slumping at the moment.
Division Slugfest
The Red Sox have a little more momentum coming into this game, although they are still just 16-31 inside the AL East this season. Plus, some of Boston’s most important hitters are slumping, which doesn’t bode well for the Red Sox. Bet on the Orioles to take the rubber match on Sunday in a toss-up game.
