The number 10 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions go to Ann Arbor to take on the number five ranked Michigan Wolverines on Saturday. This is a massive matchup with both teams currently undefeated and looking to take the lead to establish themselves as one of the teams that will be in the Big Ten Championship. This game will be only one of two college football games this week between two top 10 teams, with the other matchup being between two SEC rivals in Alabama vs. Tennessee. In terms of betting odds, the Wolverines are favored at -7 over Penn State.
Penn State Riding 5 Game Winning Streak
The Penn State Nittany Lions have had a great start to their 2022 campaign. Penn State are 5-0 on the season, coming off of a victory over Northwestern to extend their winning streak to five games.
While not a terrible passing offense, Penn State have relied on their running game and stout defense to carry them this season. Penn State are the fifth-best in the Big 10 in rushing yards per game, and running back Nicholas Singleton is 10th in the entire nation in rushing yards per carry. Singleton will be a major key factor for Penn State if they hope to pull off the upset.
In recent memory, Penn State have a slight edge over Michigan, as they have won three of the last five matchups. However, Penn State will look to get the bitter taste out of their mouth from last year, as Michigan triumph over the Nittany Lions In a close 21-17 game.
Michigan Make Compelling Bid For CFB Playoff Spot
The Michigan Wolverines are 6-0 on the season, and fifth place in the current college football rankings. That leaves Michigan just on the outside looking into the college football playoffs and its current format. A win against Penn State could very well propel Michigan into the top four, and a dominant win could see them skyrocket to two or three, depending on what happens with other teams.
Michigan have one of the best running attacks in all of college football. Junior running back Blake Corum has the third most rushing yards in the nation, gaining 735 on the ground so far through six games. Corum has also been elite in the endzone, scoring the second most rushing touchdowns in the nation with 11.
Penn State/Michigan Betting Prediction
Penn State +7 is the pick to play for this one. While Michigan is the favorite, and will likely come away with the win, Penn State is going to make this an extremely competitive game. The Nittany Lions certainly do not have the offense that the Wolverines currently sustain, but the defense is enough to maintain Michigan. If Penn State is able to deny the Wolverines in the run game, they have a great chance at not only keeping this game close, but winning the game outright. Take Penn State and the points while it is still as high as it is, as it could very well get lower as the week goes on.
