WSOP bracelet holder Richard Lee, facing felony bookmaking charges in San Antonio, agreed to a plea deal to a lesser charge of keeping a place for gambling and agreeing to hand over $2.2 million in supposed poker earnings.
Four employees of the online bookmaking operation pleaded no contest to the same charge and will pay $2,100 in fines and fees and be on unsupervised probation for a month but all will avoid jail time.
Richard Lee commented, “I’m glad it’s over,” and added “Now I need to go win another poker tournament.”
The SA police considered Lee the bookie and his home as the home base of the bookmaking operation.
First Assistant District Attorney Cliff Herberg stated, “In Texas, gambling is a misdemeanor, but when you hit them in the pocketbook, that’s where it hurts. The misdemeanor doesn’t hurt as much as the loss of all the ill-gotten gains.”
So where will all this money go?
Half of the $2.5 million forfeited would go to the San Antonio Police Department while the other stays in the DA’s office for salaries, equipment and other law enforcement purpose.
So what is next for Richard Lee…he is leaving for Vegas to play on a poker tournament at Caesars Palace.
