According to Haley Hintze at PokerNews.com Absolute Poker has released a statement via email regarding the recent alleged security breach that was uncovered throughout the last few weeks by online poker players. The email acknowledges an “Internal Security Breach” that compromised the security of Absolute poker systems “for a limited period of time”.
AP did not share with their customers the cause of the security breach, only that the breach was found, and fixed.
The following is a copy of the letter from Absolute Poker:
Dear valued player,
has identified an internal security breach that compromised our systems for a limited period of time. The cause of the breach has been determined and completely resolved. In addition, all necessary resources, both internal and external, have been engaged to ensure this does not happen again. Our investigation is not fully concluded, and we wish to thank the extended poker community for any and all assistance related to the matter.
Game integrity has always and continues to be of the utmost importance at Absolute Poker. The Management of Absolute Poker is appalled by these findings, and is committed to our players and to the integrity of our site and the online poker industry.
All players affected by the security breach will be identified during the audit process that has been initiated and all funds, including interest, will be returned. Absolute Poker would like to apologize for the recent events and is committed to diligently working with outside security firms, auditing firms, the extended poker community and the Kahnawake Gaming Commission to ensure the situation is entirely resolved.
A comprehensive statement will be forthcoming shortly providing more details of the situation.
MSNBC shed a bit more light on the situation than the letter from Absolute Poker including statements from an Absolute spokesperson affirming that the software breach was from within the company, they call the cheater a “geek that took it to far”
Adam Small of Pocket Fives reported that it was in fact not Scott Tom, according to Absolute Poker, that Scott Tom was ‘sort of framed’. The spokesman from AP wouldn’t confirm the an absolute employee attempted to Scott Tom, however he was quoted saying “No management was involved, and Scott Tom … had no part in playing on any of these accounts.”
Lou Fabiono from Casino Affiliate Programs believes this to be a step in the right direction for Absolute Poker, “Based on this article at MSN [MSNBC.com] I would say Absolute has discovered what happened and is taking steps to correct the situation and ensure it never happens again.”
However, on another side of the coin, Brandon from Chan Poker is not as impressed, saying “Everyone knows the true story now with Scott Tom, and the fact that they are blaming this on some “geek” ex employee is insulting.
Terrible job AP, just terrible.”
