The John Deere Classic is next on the list for the PGA Tour after Rickie Fowler picked up a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic over the weekend. The golf eyes will turn to Silvis Illinois, where TPC Deere Run will give fans the views and players the challenges all weekend. The John Deere Classic is usually run the week before the Open Championship but has moved up a week and will take place July 6th – July 9th.
J.T. Poston won the event in 2022 over Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grilo. All those guys are back in the event this season. Let’s take a look at a few of the favorites for the event:
Denny McCarthy +1400
Many consider McCarthy, the player to beat at this event. He has made 18 of 22 cuts this season and has 5 Top 10 finishes. McCarthy has yet to win an event, but the closest he came was a 2nd place finish at the Memorial. He also finished 7 at the Travelers and 8th at the Wells Fargo. McCarthy was headlined for his 60 on the opening day of the Travelers, so there is no doubt he can go low. Can he keep it up for four days and get his first win is the question here.
Adam Hadwin +2200
The Canadian is coming off a solid weekend at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He lost on the first playoff hole to Rickie Fowler and finished with a runner-up. It was just his first Top 10 this calendar year, but he did take 12th place at the RBC Canadian Open back at the beginning of June. Hadwin was really good with his short game all weekend, ranking him in the Top 10 in strokes gained around the green, and he was second in putting. He will need those to continue if he wants a shot at Silvis.
Keith Mitchell +3000
Mitchell has not played since his 20th place at the US Open in the middle of June. It was a nice finish for Mitchell, who had struggled a bit coming into the event. Mitchell has made the cut 15 out of 19 times and has 3 Top 10 finished. His best finish was at Pebble Beach in February, where he took home a 4th place. Mitchell has 1 career win since turning pro back in 2014.
J.T. Poston +3500
Poston is the defending champ of this event. That was his second career win on the PGA Tour. The 30-year-old from North Carolina also won the Wyndham Championship in 2019 over Webb Simpson. Poston has made 12 of 22 cuts this season and finished in the Top 10 3 times. His last time out was one to forget as he failed to make the cut shooting a 71 on Friday at the Travelers Championship. In fact, Poston has missed the cut in three of his last four events.
Emiliano Grillo +3500
The 30 year old from Argentina has been a professional golfer since 2011. He has 2 career wins, and 1 this season. He has also finished inside the Top 10, 5 times already this season. Grillo is 23rd in the FedEx standings coming into this event. His most recent form was at the Travelers, where he finished tied for 15th. Grillo has made the cut in three of his last four events but struggled at both majors – the PGA Championship and the US Open, missing in both.
There are five guys to look at when betting on this event. This should be a fun event and always seems to show a surprise at the top of the leaderboard. Expect birdies all weekend in Silvis. Enjoy the event!
