The 2023 Scottish Open will take place this weekend, as part of the European Tour, and one of their premier events. The event will take place at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. The event has been going on since 1972, every year in July. The current champion is American Xander Schauffele. Let’s take a look at the event before the Open Championship next week. Here are some favorites coming into the event:
Scottie Scheffler +650
The current top golfer in the world has been outstanding this season. Scheffler has made the cut in all 18 events, and has seen the Top 10, 14 times this season. He also has two wins on the season. Scheffler has been great at teen to green, and not fantastic with his putter. If he can get his putter going this week, look out. Scheffler’s last event outside of the Top 10 was in April, where he finished 11th at the RBC Heritage. His two wins this season were at the PLAYERS Championship and also Phoenix Open.
Rory Mcllroy +750
Rory has finished in the Top 10 in his last five events. Rory wrapped up a 7th place finish at the Travelers Championship in June, which was a week after the US Open, where he was runner-up. In January, Mcllroy was on fire, winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. Rory has shown some serious length and hope that plays a big part in his success at the Scottish Open. Rory is +750 to win the event.
Xander Schauffele +1400
The defending champion at this event is playing solid golf, but looking for that extra gear to be playing great golf. He does not have a win this calendar year, but has finished in the Top 25 in his last 8 events. Schauffele is coming off a 19th-place finish at the Travelers Championship, which came after his 10th-place finish at the US Open. His best finish of late was a runner-up at the Wells Fargo in May. Schauffele was great on the green in his most recent event, where he gained 6.4 strokes putting.
Patrick Cantlay +1400
Cantlay is coming off a tie for fourth place at the Travelers Championship. This was sparked by his final day of 67 to get there. Cantaly is 10th in the FedEx Cup but has yet to win a championship this season. Cantlay has played well at majors, with a 14th place finish at the Masters, 9th at the PGA Championship, and most recently 14th at the US Open.
Viktor Hovland +1800
Hovland is coming off a two over 72 to finish 19th at the US Open. At the same time, he was disappointed not to get into the Top 10 after all the momentum he had, by winning the Memorial to start June. Hovland did extend his Top 20 streak to four in a row. Hovland will need to be better with his approach and putting, as both ranked in the mid 40’s. Most recently, Hovland finished 29th at the Travelers Championship.
Others in Consideration:
- Rickie Fowler +1800
- Tommy Fleetwood +2000
- Tyrell Hatton +2200
- Matt Fitzpatrick +2200
- Jordan Spieth +2200
Best of luck! This should be a fun event, and will get us ready for the Open Championship the week after. Enjoy the golf!
