The 2023 Open Championship will be played at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Merseyside, England. This will be the 13th time this golf course has hosted the Open Championship. 156 players are expected to be part of the field, and the prize fund is nearly $17M. Cameron Smith from Australia was the winner at St. Andrews a season ago. The last time this course hosted the event, Rory Mcllroy, was on 2014. Let’s take a look at some of the favorites to win the event in our Open Championship Betting Preview:
Rory Mcllroy +650
The favorite to win the event, and the winner of this event in 2014. Rory has been red hot on the course with six straight finishes in the Top 10. Mcllroy went birdie, birdie to finish the Scottish Open on Sunday as the winner. It was his first win since January, when he won in Dubai. He has all the tools, and is in good mental capacity right now to compete and win this major tournament.
Scottie Scheffler +700
Scheffler has made every cut this season, and has made a remarkable 15 Top 10 finishes in 19 events. He finished the Scottish Open with a 70 on the final day, and wrapped up a third-place finish. It was a very quite third-place finish, but that’s the golf Scheffler plays. He hangs around, and has great skills late in a tournament. At +700, he has finished in the Top 10 in 7 straight events, and 10 out of his last 13. Scheffler has not finished worse than 12th all season.
Jon Rahm +1200
Rahm has not played since late June, when he finished 83rd at the Travelers. Before tha, he finished 10th at the US Open, and was 16th at the Memorial. His form has not been great, and many wonder if he will be able to hang with the conditions this weekend. His 10 Top 10 finishes and 4 wins make him a worthy candidate as one of the favorites, but there seem to be some red flags with the Spaniard currently.
Cameron Smith +1600
The winner of this event a season ago. Cam Smith has made all 15 cuts this season, has 10 Top 10 finishes and 2 victors on the tour. Smith is coming off a win at the LIV Golf event in London earlier this month. Smith is another guy that has gone 8 straight events, with nothing worse than a 12th-place finish. Smith is one of the more underrated players in the game, so the 16/1 odds could be a good deal if interested.
Viktor Hovland +2000
Hovland has made all 20 cuts this season, and 8 times finished in the Top 10. He has two wins this season, with the most recent coming at the Memorial back at the beginning of June.
Brooks Koepka +2000
Big game Brooks Koepka. His last two LIV events were 17th place and 3rd place. Remember – he won the PGA Championship in May, so adding another major would be icing on the cake for Brooks.
Xander Schauffele +2200
Schauffele looked like he was going to compete into the third round of the Scottish Open last weekend, but struggled in round 4. His 74 Sunday put him in 42nd place. Schauffele is seeking his 10th Top 10 finish of the season.
Enjoy the Open! It should be a great event. The weather is always a factor, and should be again this year. There are some great players on the course, and we expect a competitive field. Good luck with your Open Championship bets for 2023!
